It has been said time and time again that “simple” presents more challenges because it illuminates every detail as if under a magnifying glass. It is true for culinary and visual artists, couturiers, composers, writers, architects, and certainly interior designers. A meticulously edited home, with a limited color scheme, has the unique ability to soothe the senses and allow the eye to travel uninterrupted. It is with this sensibility that I chose a refined palette of palomino wood tones, creamy whites, hand-woven raffia, and golden travertine, thus creating a luminous array of neutrals. The complex challenge in this process is that every material absorbs and reflects light differently; however, when this tonal layering is mastered, it creates such a harmony that its beauty is undeniable.

The furniture, art, and objects have been thoughtfully collected and curated over the past few decades. Fauteuils from the 1940s lovingly stripped and reupholstered in a creamy white cotton look right at home around a modern pedestal table in the dining room. A similar story applies to the vintage pair of barrel-back chairs seated in front of the custom travertine fireplace. Simple, yet with an elegant form, they seamlessly marry the dining room into the adjacent living room. Perhaps the most coveted acquisition is a pair of vintage fluted column tables. Their classical form, reimagined with a natural wood patina, is the singular inspiration for this home’s incandescent color story. Lastly, it is the unexpected love affair of a 19th-century bergère and a pair of artisan-made ceramic wings that takes my breath away. Distinctly different pieces, that were purchased years apart and worlds away from one another, miraculously united as one. Each and every piece has its own personal story along with a cherished memory: the town, the shop, who I was with, and its journey during my lifetime. It’s like living with old friends...I’ve known them for most of my life.

The key to this beloved home’s success circles back to its simplicity. Open, airy, and light-filled, this petite nest is a deeply personal expression of balance, harmony, and beauty. For me, it is a sacred place that nurtures the soul.
